West Virginia State Parks announces First Day Hikes for New Year’s Day

Twenty-one state parks and forests — including Audra and Canaan — will host free guided hikes on January 1 to help visitors kick off 2026 outdoors.

West Virginia State Parks officials announced that 21 state parks and forests will host 24 First Day Hikes on January 1 to help visitors kick off 2026 with time spent outdoors.

These free guided hikes are part of a nationwide initiative to bring people together to connect with nature, explore park trails and start the year with fresh air and exercise.

“These annual hikes are one of our favorite traditions because they bring people together to enjoy West Virginia’s natural beauty,” said West Virginia State Parks acting chief Dillard Price. “Whether you’re setting a new fitness goal or simply want to experience our parks in a different season, First Day Hikes offer a fun and refreshing way to begin the year.”

Parks and forests participating in First Day Hikes this year include Audra, Beech Fork, Blackwater Falls, Bluestone, Cacapon, Canaan Valley Resort, Cass Scenic Railroad, Cedar Creek, Elk River Trail, Little Beaver, Lost River, North Bend, Pipestem Resort, Tomlinson Run, Tu-Endie-Wei, Twin Falls Resort, Tygart Lake, Valley Falls and Watoga state parks as well as Coopers Rock, Kanawha and Panther state forests.

Participants of all ages are encouraged to dress appropriately for winter conditions, wear sturdy footwear and bring water and snacks.
