Colonial Arts Center launches $5 guitar lessons May 7

BUCKHANNON — Music lovers and aspiring guitarists are invited to pick up an instrument and join the fun at Five Dollar Guitar Lesson on Thursday, May 7 from 6 to 7 p.m. Designed for players ranging from complete beginner to intermediate musician, this dirt-cheap 45-minute lesson is intended to continue regularly.

Led by guitarist, songwriter and recording artist Bryce O’Loughlin, the lesson will not be rigidly structured, but tailored to fit the interests of attendees. Student skill levels will be considered, and they will have the opportunity to communicate goals and topics they wish to be covered same-day. Preferred topics include rhythm and lead guitar techniques, self teaching through chord charts and tablature, improvisation, classic genres (funk, surf, country, oldies, classic rock), creativity and songwriting.

The class does not use sheet music, although music analysis, theory and ear training may be explored through the context of songwriting and musician-to-musician communication. Participants are asked to bring their own guitars, and payment is accepted at the door via cash, check or card. Minors must be accompanied by an adult.

With 18 years of experience as a musician and as a current member of southern rock band Reverend Rattlesnake, O’Loughlin brings expertise and enthusiasm to the session.

“This isn’t about perfection—it’s about having fun, getting comfortable with your instrument, and maybe even surprising yourself,” he said. “If you’ve ever wanted to play guitar or write songs, this is a great time to start!”

Five Dollar Guitar Lesson is intended to become a regular offering, complementing CAC’s free monthly workshop, Buckhannon Songwriters. The next session of that workshop is scheduled for Thursday, May 21 at 6 p.m. and welcomes musicians of all levels interested in writing and sharing original music.

Whether you’re dusting off an old guitar or picking one up for the first time, this event promises a welcoming, creative atmosphere where learning feels more like jamming than studying.
