Moon paddle: Hit the Buckhannon River at night with local paddlers August 8

Enjoy the beauty of the Buckhannon River at dusk with members of the Buckhannon River Watershed Association (BRWA) by attending a Moon Paddle on Friday, August 8.

This Moon Paddle is a beginner-friendly float on gentle, flatwater of the Buckhannon River. All non-motorized watercraft are welcome, including canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards. Beginning at 8 p.m., paddlers will launch from the Buckhannon Riverwalk Park at 54 Wood Street in Buckhannon.

“The Fairmont Floatilla, a paddling group in Fairmont WV, started the idea of full moon paddles,” said Jessica Bryzek, AmeriCorps VISTA working with the BRWA. “We are excited to bring this to the Buckhannon River because they are always a big hit. Paddling at dusk, colors of sky and space soften as day transitions to night. It is such a fun way to experience the river at a different time of day. If we are lucky and the skies are clear, we will hopefully get a glimpse of the full moon rising.”

Paddlers of all experience levels are required to bring their own gear including a navigation light, life jacket, drinking water, snacks and a safety whistle. Each participant’s life jacket must remain worn for the entirety of the event to ensure safety of all paddlers, especially in the dark.

This Moon Paddle is part of BRWA’s broader mission to foster community connection, environmental stewardship, and sustainable recreation along the Buckhannon River and the Buckhannon Tygart Valley Water Trail. The event will be hosted by local resident and BRWA Water Steward Kevin Nicholson.
