DHHR reports 34 new cases of COVID-19, one additional death on Wednesday

A total of 34 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in West Virginia on Wednesday, according to the state Department of Health and Human Resources. One additional death was also reported.

The state’s 51st death attributed to the virus was a 83-year old female from Berkeley County, the DHHR said.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of 5 p.m. on May 6, 2020, there have been 56,085 laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 1,276 positive, 54,809 negative and 51 deaths,” according to a press release.

The cumulative positive rate – which needs to stay below 3 percent per the governor’s reopening plan – remained 2.3 percent. The daily rate of positive cases reported was 3.7 percent.

About 38 percent of the West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 716 people have recovered and 51 have died, a mortality rate of about 6.6 percent.

New cases were reported Wednesday in Berkeley, Cabell, Clay, Fayette, Greenbrier, Hardy, Harrison, Jackson, Jefferson, Kanawha, Lincoln, Logan, Marshall, Mineral, Monongalia, Preston, Roane and Wayne counties.
