Each week Buckhannon-Upshur High School features two Fine Arts Students of the Week to highlight the work students are doing in the art world.

Visual Arts Student of the Week: Janis Childers

Grade: Junior

Student Organizations/Ensembles/Clubs/Arts Activities (in-school): National Art Honor Society

Student Accolades (Academic & Fine Arts): Recently featured as a CTE student by Mrs. Dean.

Favorite Roles/Pieces/Shows Performed/Etc: I loved completing the recent Donut Spot anniversary window mural.

Why are the arts important to you? The arts are important to me because it allows me to connect and inspire others in a way that transcends simple words.

Future Plans: I would love to pursue a degree in illustration or game art after high school.

Additional Info: I am looking forward to participating in our clay workshop later this month.

Grade: 12th

Student Organizations/Ensembles/Clubs/Arts Activities (in-school): Drum major in the marching band, concert band, jazz band, and a saxophone quartet

Student Extracurriculars Arts (Community): Shinnston Community Band and Weselyan’s Concert Band

Student Accolades (Academic & Fine Arts): Two years in the All-State Band, this year being fourth chair, WVU Honor Band, Marshall Honor Band, and Weselyan Honor Band

Favorite Roles/Pieces/Shows Performed/Etc: I loved conducting the 2023 field show for the marching band, and Johnny B. Goode was my favorite song.

Why are the arts important to you? Music is important to me because it is a form of communication that only musicians can understand. Music can also show your individuality and your improvement.

Future Plans: I plan to attend Fairmont State University for a bachelor’s degree in nursing.
