MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – WVU Medicine Golisano Children’s was named a Top Performing Hospital by the Children’s Hospitals’ Solutions for Patient Safety (SPS) Network, according to a press release.
The recognition comes as part of its annual Sharing Hospitals’ Innovations for Network Engagement (SHINE) Report, which highlights hospitals that have exceptional outcomes and that implement innovative strategies to advance safety and quality.

WVU Medicine Golisano Children’s was named a Top Performing Hospital in Employee and Staff Safety – Overexertion Events (EESOE).
“This recognition demonstrates our leadership’s commitment to employee and staff safety,” Derek Dieringer, M.B.A., C.S.P., safety manager for WVU Medicine Golisano Children’s Hospital, said. “Leadership understands that our employees’ well-being and quality of patient care are directly related. When leadership cares for and invests in their employees, staff well-being and morale improve, which directly leads to better patient outcomes and safer care.”
In creating this annual report, SPS considers each of its 150-plus participating hospitals and their commitment to creating the safest environment for patients and staff. The report recognizes hospitals for patient safety performance and organizational safety culture.

WVU Medicine Golisano Children’s teams continuously evaluate safety practices, outcomes and culture. Teams also focused on specific improvements over the past year, including training on safe patient handling equipment, patient screening for mobility needs and safe patient mobility core team oversight. The success of these programs is a combination of collaborative efforts across all of WVU Medicine.
