West Virginia reports its 500,000th overall COVID-19 case over the weekend

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Monday that 631 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 87 since the last report. In total, the state has recorded 500,228 cases as of Monday.

Locally, reported active case totals are: Upshur (7), Barbour (8), Lewis (4), Randolph (7) and Webster (0) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of one active case over the weekend.

One additional death has been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 61-year old male from Kanawha County. 

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of April 25, 2022, there are currently 631 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There has been one death reported since the last report, with a total of 6,824 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release. 

About 86 residents are hospitalized with the virus (58% unvaccinated, 42% vaccinated), with 21 currently in intensive care (52% unvaccinated, 48% vaccinated) and 10 on a ventilator (50% unvaccinated, 50% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 4.45%. 

A total of 973,426 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 54% of the state. Of those, 463,183 are fully vaccinated and have received their booster dose.
