CHARLESTON — Two Girl Scouts have earned the prestigious Girl Scout Silver Award after completing an improvement project designed to create a lasting benefit for their community.
Girl Scouts Morgan White and Laurel Schmalzer of Charleston completed Project Picnic Table, a hands-on service project that involved researching a community need, securing funding, planning and constructing picnic tables and helping prepare the area where the tables were ultimately placed.
The project began in June 2025 and was completed in July 2026, with the Girl Scouts contributing a combined 68 hours to the effort.
As part of their project, the Girl Scouts shared their research and wrote a grant proposal to the City of Charleston. Their project received a $500 Hearts of Our Neighborhood Grant, which was used to purchase materials for the picnic tables.
The project required the Girl Scouts to take on leadership roles throughout the process, including research, planning, supply inventory, construction and trail work. The project included multiple build days as well as work to grade sites and add gravel before the project was completed.
“Morgan and Laurel’s project is an example of what can happen when girls take an idea and see it through,” said Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council CEO Beth Casey. “Their planning and hands-on effort reflect the dedication and leadership they brought to this project.”
The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn. Through the award, Girl Scouts identify a community issue, develop and carry out a sustainable project and demonstrate leadership while creating meaningful change.
