West Virginia records more than 30,000 new COVID-19 cases in the last week

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Monday that 20,392 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 3,028 since the last report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (174), Barbour (78), Lewis (94), Randolph (308) and Webster (72) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decrease of six active cases over the weekend.

Nineteen additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – of a 49-year old female from Berkeley County, a 70-year old male from Raleigh County, a 69-year old female from Harrison County, an 82-year old male from Hardy County, a 63-year old male from Hampshire County, an 80-year old female from Wyoming County, a 61-year old female from Hampshire County, an 88-year old female from Jackson County, an 80-year old female from Hardy County, an 87-year old male from Jefferson County, an 80-year old male from Mercer County, a 75-year old female from Cabell County, a 67-year old male from Marshall County, a 77-year old female from Raleigh County, an 87-year old male from Wood County, a 50-year old male from Pocahontas County, an 87-year old female from Raleigh County, an 81-year old female from Mingo County, and an 86-year old male from Monongalia County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of January 17, 2022, there are currently 20,392 COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 19 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 5,535 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release.

About 829 residents are hospitalized with the virus (72% unvaccinated, 28% vaccinated), with 205 currently in intensive care (86% unvaccinated, 14% vaccinated) and 119 on a ventilator (91% unvaccinated, 9% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 22.51%.

A total of 942,475 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 53% of the state. Of those, 361,966 have received their booster dose.
