The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Thursday that 2,256 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 99 since the last report.
Locally, reported active case totals are: Upshur (21), Barbour (35), Lewis (19), Randolph (40) and Webster (2) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decrease of one active case in the last 24 hours.
Nine additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 79-year old female from Upshur County, a 92-year old female from Clay County, a 75-year old female from Raleigh County, a 77-year old male from Roane County, a 77-year old female from Harrison County, a 71-year old female from Raleigh County, a 96-year old male from Boone County, a 45-year old male from Kanawha County, and an 82-year old female from Webster County.
“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of May 26, 2022, there are currently 2,256 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been nine deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 6,942 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release.
About 143 residents are hospitalized with the virus (41% unvaccinated, 59% vaccinated), with 27 currently in intensive care (37% unvaccinated, 63% vaccinated) and 10 on a ventilator (30% unvaccinated, 70% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 8.25%.
A total of 978,166 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said. That’s about 55% of the state. About 495,949 booster doses have been administered.
