Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital now offers ultrasound-guided breast biopsy

Vandalia Health Mon Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital is expanding access to advanced breast care services with the introduction of ultrasound-guided breast biopsy, providing patients in the region with a minimally invasive diagnostic option close to home, according to a press release from Vandalia Health.

The first procedure was recently completed at the hospital by William Burns, MD, marking an important step forward in enhancing local access to breast health services. Burns, who recently transitioned his medical practice from Morgantown to Weston, specializes in endoscopic, general and minimally invasive surgery.

An ultrasound-guided breast biopsy is a procedure used to evaluate suspicious areas in the breast by using ultrasound imaging to guide a needle for tissue sampling. This method allows for precise targeting of abnormalities while minimizing discomfort and recovery time compared to more invasive surgical biopsies.

“This new service is an important advancement for our community,” said Lisa Songer, chief administrative officer of Vandalia Health Mon Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital. “By offering ultrasound-guided breast biopsy locally, we’re helping patients receive timely answers without the added stress of traveling outside the area.”

“Ultrasound-guided breast biopsy is a highly accurate, minimally invasive way to evaluate breast abnormalities,” Burns said. “Being able to offer this service at Mon Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital means patients can receive the care they need more quickly and conveniently.”

Breast biopsies are often recommended when imaging studies, such as mammograms or ultrasounds, identify an area of concern. The ability to perform these procedures locally can help reduce delays in diagnosis and treatment, improving overall patient experience and outcomes.
