Soccer ‘Cats get shutout of MEC postseason honors

BRIDGEPORT – The University of Charleston men’s soccer team swept all four major award categories when the Mountain East Conference announced Friday morning the 2024 all-conference selections. MEC head coaches participate in the nomination process and final vote to determine all-conference first, second, and honorable mention teams; the all-freshman team; and four top individual honors.

UC’s Jack Kay was named the MEC Offensive Player of the Year, while teammate Tristen Rose claimed Defensive Player of the Year honors. Another Golden Eagles defender, Joao Silva, was picked as the league’s top freshman, while UC head coach Daniel Smee was again named MEC Coach of the Year.

UC enters the MEC tournament with a 16-1-1 record. Kay is tied for second among all goal scorers with 10 in 17 appearances. Rose and Silva anchor a defense that ranks fifth nationally in goals against average (.588, 10 goals allowed in 17 games). Smee led UC to its third consecutive regular season championship, and the Golden Eagles will try to take home the tournament crown for a seventh consecutive time.

Overall, Charleston led the way with seven first-team selections and three second-team picks.

West Virginia Wesleyan finished with a 4-10-4 record and a 3-8-3 mark in the MEC, but did not have anyone selected for post season honors.
