Soccer Bucs tumble to Indians, 3-1

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur soccer Bucs played well but came up short in a 3-1 setback to Bridgeport in a Big 10 Conference battle Tuesday night at the high school.

The Bucs held a statical advantage in the game but could only find the back of the net once.

“Unfortunately, we couldn’t cap off the evening with goals we deserved based on our play tonight,” stated Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Mike Donato. “Our guys played hard and possessed the ball well, and for the most part, defended well. We just got ourselves caught where the few mistakes we’ve been making in the course of a game have allowed the other team to capitalize on them. We’ve done some good things and our young guys are starting to progress, so once we get things clicking again we’ll be OK as we start to prepare for the postseason in the coming weeks.”

The Bucs and Indians could very well have a rematch in the upcoming sectional tournament.

Josh Jackson scored the lone first-half goal when he gave Bridgeport a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute. He scored on a header off of a corner kick.

Bridgeport went up 2-0 when Burton Khosa scored an unassisted goal when he picked up a loose ball outside of the penalty area and scored in the 48th minute.

The Bucs got on the scoreboard three minutes later when Zach Calef-Boring played a through ball from Christian Dowell and scored with a shot to the far post.

Bridgeport added an insurance goal in the 62nd minute on a shot by Brock Amos from 20 yards out.

The Bucs owned a 10-9 lead in shots-on-goals and held a 3-2 margin in corner kicks.

Fouls were tied at eight apiece.

B-U keeper Dalton Auvil made five saves while Bridgeport goalie Levi Crayton stopped nine shots.

The loss dropped the Bucs to 5-7-4 on the season and 5-4 in the Big 10 Conference. They will return to the pitch Thursday visiting Lewis County for a league outing at 7:30 p.m.
