Short-handed wrestling Bucs finish 3-2 at Grafton Duals

GRAFTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur wrestling Bucs went 3-2 to wrap up the 2021 portion of their season in the Grafton Duals on Dec. 30.

The Bucs defeated host Grafton by a 42-19 score, Weir by a 46-16 count and Tyler Consolidated for a 42-30 win.

They dropped decisions to a pair of ranked Class AA teams in No. 3 Fairmont Senior (44-27) and No. 6 Braxton County (48-24).

The Bucs amassed their 3-2 record despite forfeiting four weight classes (120, 170, 182, and 195 pounds) due to injury or sickness.

The Bucs had three wrestlers post perfect 5-0 records – Liam Garcia (113 pounds), Nathan Cornett (145 pounds) and Alex Bennett (220-285 pounds).

Bennett had four falls while Garcia recorded three and Cornett two.

Brodee Kennedy (132 pounds) and Jeremiah Thompson (220-285 pounds) both earned 4-1 marks.

Kennedy had two falls while Thompson had one pin.

Also recording winning marks for the Bucs at 3-2 were Ian Cornett (106 pounds), Tucker Hurst (138 pounds) and Luke Bohnsack (152-160 pounds).

On the same day, three B-U junior varsity wrestlers competed at Gilmer County with Andrew McDowell (138 pounds) going 1-1 with a fall and Daniel Hedrick (132 pounds) and Landen Zirkle (145 pounds) both going 1-1.

The Bucs were slated to visit Brooke Saturday (Jan. 8) in a regional preview quad with Brooke, Preston and University.

They will be back in action this coming Friday and Saturday in the Winner’s Choice Tournament in Fairmont.
