Morrisey announces half-day holiday for state employees ahead of America250 weekend

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Gov. Patrick Morrisey on Monday proclaimed that state employees may be excused from work beginning at noon on Thursday, July 2, without charge to accrued annual leave, allowing them to begin the Independence Day holiday weekend early and participate in America250 celebrations taking place across West Virginia.

“The 250th anniversary of the United States is a once-in-a-lifetime milestone, and I want every West Virginian to have the opportunity to celebrate the birth of our nation,” said Morrisey. “By providing state employees with a half-day holiday, we’re recognizing both their hard work and the extraordinary significance of this historic anniversary while encouraging them to spend time with their families and take part in America250 events across the Mountain State.”

America250 commemorates the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, and the founding of the United States. Communities throughout West Virginia will host events honoring the nation’s history, with the State Capitol Complex serving as the site of a four-day Capital City Celebration beginning Thursday evening, July 2, and continuing through Sunday, July 5.

“America’s 250th anniversary reminds us of the courage, sacrifice, and enduring ideals that have defined our nation for generations,” Morrisey said. “I encourage everyone to enjoy this historic weekend, celebrate safely, and reflect on the freedoms that make our country—and our state—so special.”

The proclamation does not apply to private businesses, local governments or other non-state employers. Employees whose duties are necessary to protect the health, safety and welfare of West Virginians will continue to work as required and will be compensated in accordance with applicable personnel rules.

State law also permits county commissions and courts to designate the afternoon of July 2 as a half-day legal holiday for their respective employees.
