Dear WVWC Students:
On behalf of the City of Buckhannon and our 85 excellent employees, I bring you warmest greetings from City Hall. To those of you returning to your “Home Among the Hills,” we’re very happy to welcome you back. To our newest students comprising the Class of 2023, we’re most pleased to welcome you and your families to your new community of Buckhannon aka “Bucktown” aka “SunnyBuck!”
As the dad of five kids, four of whom graduated as Bobcats, you’ve chosen well in deciding upon WVWC as your college. I’m beginning my 37th year of teaching at WVWC, so maybe I’ll come to know some of you in the classroom. Almost all of our current City Council have either worked at WVWC or are alums or parents of alums. We all love Wesleyan, and know there isn’t a prettier campus anywhere in our region.
There are so many fun things to do in our beautiful downtown. From sampling the cuisine in our many fine restaurants and cafes to Festival Fridays in Jawbone Park, to checking out the many cool arts and flora to hitting our terrific River Trail- there truly is something for everyone. Check out our Dog Park! All self-respecting Wesleyan students pose with our Lurch statue on Main Street as our fave, former WVWC student dons new attire for each holiday or City promotion. Check out ginormous “French Creek Freddie” in Jawbone Park. Peek in at the progress at our Colonial Theatre, or grab an ice cream cone and walk down Trader’s Alley.
We invite you to attend the WVWC Festival Friday on August 30 and our City’s FallFest celebration downtown on September 25-28. Who doesn’t love a cool carnival with music playing in Jawbone and on Main Street? Trust me when I say Buckhannon knows how to throw a party! At the end of October, Buckhannon Community Theatre performs “Dracula” in our Colonial Theatre right next door to the Dairy Queen. Plan on attending these very cool events! We’re always looking for college student volunteers and work studies at our Stockert Youth & Community Center to help out with our many recreational and after-school programs catering primarily to kids aged 5 to 12. Please get involved in your community. You’ll never regret engaging with and attaching to our terrific town. Enjoy the most excellent 2019-20 school year at good ole Wesley World!
Please be aware of some of our new traffic law changes, especially along Camden Avenue where the speed limit is now 15 miles per hour from Meade Street to the River Trail, and the four-way stop downtown at Florida and Madison Streets by Don Pacos! Feel free to pop in for a visit at City Hall at 70 East Main Street anytime!
