Lady ‘Cat lacrosse team comes up just short at D&E

BUCKHANON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Wesleyan (3-9, 0-6) lacrosse team dropped a home conference matchup versus Davis & Elkins (6-7, 3-3) on Friday afternoon at Ross Field.
 
WVWC Leaders
Makenzi Lewellyn found the back of the net for a career-high five times. Kaitlynn Canby scored four goals, Emma Adcock chipped in three scores and Isabella Verona added two. Lewellyn and Canby each had two assists while Iris Kolenich dished out one. Lewellyn scooped up a game-high eight ground balls. Maggie Wroe made 13 saves.
 
Davis & Elkins Leaders
Two Senators, Griselle Rosado and Ari Hinton, accounted for 10 of the 16 D&E goals. Hinton passed two assists. Emily Smith picked up five ground balls and goaltender Marissa Cuevas saved 14 shots on goal.
 
Inside the First Half
Both teams accumulated a goal each within the first minute of action. Hinton found Zoie Donaldson for D&E’s first goal. Lewellyn got the Lady Bobcats on the board with 14:06 left in the first quarter. Hinton scored her first goal of the day with 8:50 to go in the first. The Senators grew their lead to three when Canby found the back of the net for her first score of the day with 29 seconds left in the first quarter. The visitors held a 4-2 lead after one.
 
Lewellyn struck quickly in the second quarter and put the Lady ‘Cats within one 12 seconds in. After a Senators goal, Lewellyn scored her third time at the 10:35 mark. Canby found Adcock to knot the score at five with less than seven minutes remaining in the first half. D&E regained the lead at the 3:42 mark. Verona tied the score at six 15 seconds later. The game was tied at the end of the first half.
 
Inside the Second Half
The Senators came out hot in the second half and scored three consecutive goals. The Lady Bobcats responded and scored three straight goals of their own to tie the score at nine. The visitors responded and regained a three-goal lead with 4:42 left in the third. Adcock put the Lady ‘Cats within two before the third quarter expired.
 
The first three goals of the final quarter belonged to the Senators. D&E held a five-goal lead with 10:57 to go. Following two goals from Lewellyn and a score by Canby, the Lady Bobcats trailed by two points with 3:57 left in the game. The Lady ‘Cats could not complete the comeback and the Senators won narrowly, 16-14.

The Lady Bobcats will be back in action next Friday when they will travel to South Euclid, Ohio, for a tilt versus Notre Dame (Ohio) beginning at 3 p.m.
