Colonial Arts Center announces first camp experience for students with a Young Director’s Camp this January

Buckhannon, W.Va. — During the winter and the holiday break, students and families are typically looking for extra activities before the after-school sports and clubs pick back up again for the spring.

The Colonial Arts Center is launching its very first camp this January, catered toward eighth through twelfth grade students to explore and learn how to be a new theatre director. Students will have the opportunity to spend five days exploring the behind-the-scenes world of theatre directing and gaining practical skills by working with short scenes. The students will also have an opportunity to work with local experts in the local acting and directing industry.

CAC Manager Anne Wilson and Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School Theatre Club Director Sawyer Alderman, are teaming up to offer a new theatre experience for those ages 13-17 that have a passion for acting, directing, technical directing, and arts administration. Not only will Sawyer and Anne provide training and education in directing a show, but the students will create their own director’s book that they can refer back to for their own future projects. Special guests will also join Sawyer and Anne to provide further feedback and tell personal stories and experiences as local directors and actors.

The Young Director’s Camp will be held at the Colonial Arts Center from January 17 through the 21. Camp registration is open for students in 8th through 12th grade. Tuition cost for this camp is $150.00 for each student.

Sawyer added, “I found my love of directing very early. I was fortunate enough to take classes and gain experiences (including directing my first main stage show) before I graduated high school. After settling in Buckhannon and getting to work with the students of Upshur County, I knew that I wanted to bring those same opportunities here. I am so excited to see what these students can do!”

Spots for the camp are limited to ten students, and the CAC encourages those parents and families interested in signing up their students to do so as soon as possible.
