Lifeguard Certification Classes Scheduled at Glenville State

Red Cross lifeguard certification will take place at Glenville State College’s Pool later this month

Glenville, WV – Individuals interested in earning or renewing certification as a Red Cross lifeguard should make plans to sign up for classes being offered at Glenville State College’s Pool at the end of the month.

The class, for first-time certification, is scheduled for June 29, 30, July 1, 2, 6, 7, 8, and 9 and will last from 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. daily. The cost for the certification is $225 per person. Individuals who are looking to complete their recertification should attend June 29, 30, July 1, 2, and 3 from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. The cost for recertification is $100 per person. All classes will take place at the GSC Pool which is located in the Health and Physical Education Building.

Participants, who should be at least 15 years old by the last day of the class, must pass a swim test at the first session. The test consists of a 300-meter continuous swim using either the front crawl or breaststroke, treading water, hands-free, for two minutes in the deep end of the pool, and completing a brick retrieval within one minute forty seconds.

Course modifications will take place as advised by the Red Cross COVID-19 guidelines including staggering the times of the swim test, using a life-size mannequin to conduct saves instead of class participants, use of individual CPR trainers, and incorporating more online course work. Class size is limited to 12, so interested individuals are encouraged to register soon.
