West Virginia reports 662 active COVID cases, 21 new deaths on Tuesday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Tuesday that 662 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 31 since the last report. 

Locally, reported active case totals are: Upshur (10), Barbour (12), Lewis (1), Randolph (6) and Webster (0) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of three active cases in the last 24 hours. 

Twenty-one additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – an 88-year old male from Kanawha County, an 87-year old female from Tyler County, a 58-year old female from Jefferson County, an 89-year old female from Randolph County, a 73-year old female from Wayne County, a 63-year old male from Cabell County, an 84-year old female from Putnam County, a 74-year old female from Harrison County, a 56-year old female from Raleigh County, a 94-year old male from McDowell County, a 64-year old female from Wood County, a 69-year old female from Logan County, a 75-year old male from Pocahontas County, a 95-year old female from Fayette County, a 74-year old female from Raleigh County, an 86-year old male from Tucker County, a 76-year old female from Logan County, a 79-year old female from Lewis County, a 42-year old female from Putnam County, a 47-year old male from Cabell County, and a 67-year old female from Fayette County. 

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of April 26, 2022, there are currently 662 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 21 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 6,845 deaths attributed to COVID-19.,” according to a press release. 

About 81 residents are hospitalized with the virus (49% unvaccinated, 51% vaccinated), with 22 currently in intensive care (50% unvaccinated, 50% vaccinated) and 12 on a ventilator (42% unvaccinated, 58% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 5.12%. 

A total of 973,605 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 54% of the state. Of those, 463,010 are fully vaccinated and have received their booster dose.
