West Virginia reports 2,387 active COVID cases, 16 new deaths on Tuesday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Tuesday that 2,387 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s a decrease of 160 since the last report. 

Locally, reported active case totals are: Upshur (28), Barbour (13), Lewis (21), Randolph (27) and Webster (4) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decrease of four active cases in the last 24 hours. 

Sixteen additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 71-year old male from Kanawha County, a 66-year old male from Wayne County, a 65-year old male from Raleigh County, a 73-year old male from Raleigh County, a 71-year old female from Raleigh County, an 81-year old male from Raleigh County, a 77-year old female from Mason County, a 72-year old male from Raleigh County, a 73-year old male from Putnam County, an 81-year old female from Cabell County, a 72-year old male from Kanawha County, an 83-year old male from Jackson County, a 76-year old female from Raleigh County, a 62-year old female from Preston County, a 74-year old female from Mineral County, and a 74-year old male from Lincoln County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of June 7, 2022, there are currently 2,387 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 16 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 6,993 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release. 

About 179 residents are hospitalized with the virus (48% unvaccinated, 52% vaccinated), with 30 currently in intensive care (53% unvaccinated, 47% vaccinated) and nine on a ventilator (78% unvaccinated, 22% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 7.43%. 

A total of 979,603 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 55% of the state. About 504,974 booster doses have been administered.
