West Virginia reports 2,196 active COVID cases on Thursday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Thursday that 2,196 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s a decrease of 76 since the last report.

Locally, reported active case totals are: Upshur (25), Barbour (13), Lewis (18), Randolph (37) and Webster (9) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of two active cases in the last 24 hours.

One additional death has been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 96-year old male from Cabell County.

Please note that the National Center for Health Statistics will be unable to certify deaths from June 6-20 due to a system update affecting all 50 states. This will result in a decrease in deaths reported during this time period.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of June 9, 2022, there are currently 2,196 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There has been one death reported since the last report, with a total of 6,998 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release.

About 188 residents are hospitalized with the virus (50% unvaccinated, 50% vaccinated), with 28 currently in intensive care (54% unvaccinated, 46% vaccinated) and 6 on a ventilator (17% unvaccinated, 83% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 5.79%.

A total of 979,963 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 55% of the state. About 506,725 booster doses have been administered.
