Early voting in West Virginia runs October 21 through October 31 for the November 3 general election, the first statewide general election under the state’s new photo ID law.

In Upshur County, early voting is at the Upshur County Courthouse, 40 W. Main St. in Buckhannon, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays.

West Virginia Secretary of State Kris Warner’s October 19 release lists these examples of acceptable voter ID:

  • West Virginia driver’s license or state-issued identification card;
  • Driver’s license issued by another state;
  • U.S. passport or passport card;
  • Photo employee identification issued by a local, state or federal government;
  • Photo student identification issued by a WV institution of higher education or a WV high school;
  • U.S. military identification with a photo;
  • Photo voter registration card issued by a WV county clerk or the WV Secretary of State; and
  • Identification issued by the DMV without a photo for voters who swear and affirm that they belong to a recognized religious community that prohibits them from being photographed.

The release directs voters to W.Va. Code §3-1-34 and §3-2-10(g-i) for the full ID rules, including exceptions.

The secretary of state’s early voting directory lists locations and weekday hours by county. Saturday voting hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to the office’s GoVoteWV calendar.
