West Virginia COVID-19 death toll hits 2,800 with 11 new deaths Wednesday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Wednesday that 426 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State.

Eleven additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 71-year old male from Kanawha County, an 81-year old male from Berkeley County, a 67-year old male from Mingo County, a 72-year old female from Morgan County, a 66-year old male from Cabell County, a 90-year old female from Wood County, a 74-year old female from Ohio County, a 90-year old male from Kanawha County, a 64-year old male from Jefferson County, a 79-year old female from Hancock County, and a 67-year old female from Greenbrier County.

That puts the total number of reported COVID-19 deaths in West Virginia since the pandemic began at 2,800.

Locally, new cases were reported in Upshur (1), Barbour (9), Lewis (5) and Randolph (2) counties on Wednesday. A total of 32 cases are currently active in Upshur County, according to the DHHR.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of April 21, 2021, there have been 2,633,918 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 149,888 total cases and 2,800 total deaths,” according to a press release.

About 7,293 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 139,795 people have recovered and 2,800 have died. The daily percent positive was 3.83%.

A total of 520,206 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said.
