BUCKHANNON — Upshur County is entering its second week of flood recovery with debris collection continuing and supplies, meals, health care, counseling and volunteer help available across the area.
Here is what residents need to know. This story will be updated as new information becomes available.
National Guard debris collection will continue
The West Virginia Army National Guard will remain in Upshur County and continue free flood-debris collection until the work is finished. An earlier announcement that collection would end Tuesday no longer applies.
Residents should still move flood-damaged furniture, drywall, appliances and other belongings to the edge of the right-of-way as soon as possible. Items must be accessible from public property without blocking roads, sidewalks or drainage paths. No appointment or pickup request is needed, and crews will visit back roads, side streets and city alleyways.
The service is for flood debris only. Anyone who needs help moving damaged items from a home should call the Upshur County Office of Emergency Management at (304) 472-4983 to request a volunteer cleanup crew. Read the full debris collection update.
Report property damage
Residents and business owners affected by the flooding should complete the state’s online damage survey. A complete count will help officials document the need for federal recovery assistance.
People are encouraged to share the survey with affected friends, relatives and neighbors who may not have seen it.
Supplies and drinking water
The Auxiliary Gymnasium at West Virginia Wesleyan College remains the county’s central location for relief supplies. It is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at 151 Cebe Ross Drive. Residents can walk in and take the supplies they need.
The gym has ample drinking water. Water is also available at the Ellamore Volunteer Fire Department and the community building at Ten Mile.
Current needs include laundry detergent, extension cords, pet food, cat litter, box fans, fresh fruit, bread, jelly, peanut butter, contractor trash bags, Odoban mold killer, shovels, squeegees, mops, brooms, lime, dehumidifiers, shop vacuums and heavy-duty totes.
Regular donations should be taken to the oval by the chapel fountain off Camden Avenue. Large or commercial deliveries should use the parking lot at 151 Cebe Ross Drive. Online orders for flood relief can be shipped to the Buckhannon Fire Department, 22 S. Florida St., Buckhannon, WV 26201.

Volunteer or request cleanup help
Residents who need help moving flood-damaged items or cleaning out a home should call the Upshur County Office of Emergency Management at (304) 472-4983. The office will connect callers with a volunteer group.
Individuals and groups who want to help should check in with the Buckhannon Fire Department or call the Office of Emergency Management before heading to affected neighborhoods. Officials said coordinating in advance allows volunteers to be assigned where they are needed and helps prevent safety hazards and traffic congestion.
Free crisis counseling
Community Care of West Virginia is offering drop-in crisis counseling from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at the West Virginia Wesleyan College Health Center.
No appointment is needed. Trained mental health professionals are available to help people coping with the flood’s emotional impact or looking for additional resources.
Free tetanus and hepatitis vaccines
Vandalia Health Mon Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital is offering free tetanus and hepatitis vaccines from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays through Friday, July 31. Walk-ins are welcome at the hospital’s main entrance lobby, 230 Hospital Plaza in Weston. Call (304) 269-8000 for more information. See the vaccine clinic details.
Community Care of West Virginia is also offering free tetanus shots at all its locations with no appointment needed. The shots are available to residents, first responders and volunteers working in flood zones. Find the nearest clinic at ccwv.org/locations.
Free meals and food assistance
Chapel Hill United Methodist Church will serve free meals from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday, July 27, Wednesday, July 29 and Friday, July 31.
At the Upshur Parish House, 68 College Ave., lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. Flood relief services have moved next door to the Hall House, while the food pantry and Crosslines services remain in the Parish House.
Operation BBQ Relief is serving lunch and dinner at Walmart Supercenter, 100 Buckhannon Crossroads, and plans to continue while the need remains.
Whistle Stop Bar and Grill, 23 N. Spring St., has prepaid meal tickets available. Anyone who needs a meal can take a paid receipt from the wall and give it to an employee. See the latest meal information.
