BUCKHANNON — Upshur County is entering its second week of flood recovery with debris collection continuing and supplies, meals, health care, counseling and volunteer help available across the area.
Here is what residents need to know. This story will be updated as new information becomes available.
National Guard debris collection will continue
The West Virginia Army National Guard will remain in Upshur County and continue free flood-debris collection until the work is finished. An earlier announcement that collection would end Tuesday no longer applies.
Residents should still move flood-damaged furniture, drywall, appliances and other belongings to the edge of the right-of-way as soon as possible. Items must be accessible from public property without blocking roads, sidewalks or drainage paths. No appointment or pickup request is needed, and crews will visit back roads, side streets and city alleyways.
The service is for flood debris only. Anyone who needs help moving damaged items from a home should call the Upshur County Office of Emergency Management at (304) 472-4983 to request a volunteer cleanup crew. Read the full debris collection update.
Report property damage
Residents and business owners affected by the flooding should complete the state’s online damage survey. A complete count will help officials document the need for federal recovery assistance.
People are encouraged to share the survey with affected friends, relatives and neighbors who may not have seen it.
Free water testing
Residents affected by the flooding can also have their water tested at no cost. The West Virginia Threat Preparedness and Environmental Health team is offering the testing, with priority given to households on private wells.

West Virginia’s Largest Yard Sale canceled
West Virginia’s Largest Yard Sale, scheduled for August 7 and 8, has been canceled as recovery efforts continue in Upshur and Lewis counties.
The Upshur County Visitor Center said the decision was made with guidance from the Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, the Upshur County Commission and the City of Buckhannon, with the agreement of the Lewis County Convention and Visitors Bureau. Officials cited damaged infrastructure and the need to prioritize public safety and emergency resources.
Festival Fridays canceled July 31
Create Buckhannon has canceled the July 31 Festival Fridays event to allow time to clean Jawbone Park and assess sound equipment destroyed during the flood.
Create Buckhannon is also making donations to the Parish House, Band of Brothers and the Rotary Club of Buckhannon-Upshur Foundation, three organizations providing direct assistance to residents.
West Virginia Wesleyan College pool reopens
West Virginia Wesleyan College said its pool has reopened and swim lessons will take place as scheduled.
The college thanked the community for its patience over the past week while the campus and community focused on flood cleanup and recovery.
Upshur County pool open; use upper parking lot
Upshur County Recreation Park announced that the county pool is also open.
The park asked visitors to use the upper parking lot this week rather than park near the pool or baseball field because FFA is setting up for its livestock show and sale.
UCYLA Show and Sale events remain on schedule
All Upshur County Youth Livestock Association Show and Sale events will proceed as scheduled, according to a Facebook post from the association.
UCYLA said its 4-H and FFA exhibitors spent the past year raising and caring for market livestock projects, attending educational meetings, completing project books, tracking expenses and maintaining animal health records.
The association invited the public to attend the livestock shows and Market Livestock Sale to support the exhibitors. It directed residents seeking flood recovery resources and updates to the WVU Upshur County Extension Office Facebook page.
Supplies and drinking water
The Auxiliary Gymnasium at West Virginia Wesleyan College remains the county’s central location for relief supplies. It is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 151 Cebe Ross Drive. Residents can walk in and take the supplies they need.
As of Tuesday, July 28, the center is at capacity on many items. Officials asked the public to donate shop vacuums, box fans and dehumidifiers, which remain in demand for drying out flood-damaged homes.

Regular donations should be taken to the parking lot at 151 Cebe Ross Drive. Online orders for flood relief can be shipped to the Buckhannon Fire Department, 22 S. Florida St., Buckhannon, WV 26201.

Church supply distribution open through Saturday
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 179 South Kanawha Street in Buckhannon is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day through Saturday, August 1.
Available items include clothing, shoes, bedding, baby items, bottled water, nonperishable food, hygiene products, books, toys, small appliances, toilet paper, cleaning supplies and more.
The church said it can no longer accept donations because of the overwhelming community response.
Volunteer or request cleanup help
Volunteers age 13 and older are needed from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the distribution center in the West Virginia Wesleyan College Auxiliary Gym. Volunteers will help get supplies into the hands of families who need them.
Residents who need help moving flood-damaged items or cleaning out a home should call the Upshur County Office of Emergency Management at (304) 472-4983. The office will connect callers with a volunteer group.
Individuals and groups who want to help should check in with the Buckhannon Fire Department or call the Office of Emergency Management before heading to affected neighborhoods. Officials said coordinating in advance allows volunteers to be assigned where they are needed and helps prevent safety hazards and traffic congestion.
Mobile vaccines and counseling available Tuesday and Wednesday
Community Care of West Virginia will operate a mobile vaccination and crisis counseling unit from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, at the Ellamore Volunteer Fire Department, 9797 Old Elkins Road in Ellamore.
The unit will offer the same services from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 29, at the Ten Mile Community Building, 2279 Ten Mile Road in Tallmansville.
Tetanus and hepatitis A vaccines will be available both days, and behavioral health professionals will be on site.
Free crisis counseling
Community Care of West Virginia is offering drop-in crisis counseling from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at the West Virginia Wesleyan College Health Center.
No appointment is needed. Trained mental health professionals are available to help people coping with the flood’s emotional impact or looking for additional resources.
Free tetanus and hepatitis vaccines
Community Care of West Virginia is also offering free tetanus shots and hepatitis A shots at all its locations with no appointment needed. The shots are available to residents, first responders and volunteers working in flood zones. Find the nearest clinic at ccwv.org/locations.
Vandalia Health Mon Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital is offering free tetanus and hepatitis vaccines from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays through Friday, July 31. Free meals and food assistance
Chapel Hill United Methodist Church will serve free meals from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday, July 27, Wednesday, July 29 and Friday, July 31.
At the Upshur Parish House, 68 College Ave., lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. Flood relief services have moved next door to the Hall House, while the food pantry and Crosslines services remain in the Parish House.
Operation BBQ Relief is serving lunch and dinner at Walmart Supercenter, 100 Buckhannon Crossroads, and plans to continue while the need remains.
Whistle Stop Bar and Grill, 23 N. Spring St., has prepaid meal tickets available. Anyone who needs a meal can take a paid receipt from the wall and give it to an employee. See the latest meal information.
