West Virginia COVID-19 cases push past 80,000 mark on Saturday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Saturday that 1,341 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State.

Locally, new cases were reported in Upshur (6), Barbour (12), Lewis (4), Randolph (5) and Webster (1) counties.

Although the weekly school map will not be released today due to the holidays, the daily map published by the DHHR shows only one green county, one yellow county, and three gold counties. Most of the state is red, including Upshur County, where 133 cases are currently active, according to the DHHR.

Saturday’s Upshur County update:

  • Added three probable and three confirmed cases were added on Dec. 25
  • One confirmed case was added to Dec. 24
  • One probable case was removed from Dec. 23

Seven additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 70-year old female from Jefferson County, a 68-year old female from Cabell County, a 91-year old male from Cabell County, an 87-year old male from Cabell County, a 66-year old female from Cabell County, a 63-year old male from Jefferson County, and a 77-year old female from Preston County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of December 26, 2020, there have been 1,447,287 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 80,177 total cases and 1,253 deaths,” according to a press release.

About 24,629 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 54,295 people have recovered and 1,253 have died. The daily percent positive was 9.38%.
