Gov. Patrick Morrisey signed a proclamation recognizing June 19, 2026, as Juneteenth Day in West Virginia, honoring the end of slavery and urging reflection on freedom. He noted West Virginia abolished slavery on Feb. 3, 1865, before the 13th Amendment.

A man was arrested after he allegedly allowed a 10-year-old to operate the throttle on a motorcycle, leading to a crash that seriously injured the child. Authorities said the man then fled, leaving the injured child at the side of the road.

Buckhannon’s fireworks rules are narrower than many residents think: because July 4 falls on a Saturday this year, fireworks are only permitted inside city limits from 11 a.m.–11 p.m. on Independence Day itself. The rule helps protect pets, veterans and others sensitive to noise.

Buckhannon’s water department is upgrading the Central Avenue water main, replacing an aging 4-inch cast iron line with a new 6-inch line. They ask residents to limit parking along the road and will notify customers when they transition to the new system.
