The West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History (WVDACH) and West Virginia Archives and History is proud to present “Piecing Together Community,” a vibrant new exhibition which opened on June 17, 2025, in the Archives and History Reading Room at the Culture Center, State Capitol Complex. The exhibit celebrates the powerful role quilting plays in building, preserving, and honoring community. Quilts tell stories, and this summer, they’re telling ours. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
Quilts have always been more than just fabric and thread. They are social documents. They carry the fingerprints of families, neighborhoods, and movements. This exhibit invites visitors to experience quilts not only as art, but as acts of connection.
Ranging from historical artifacts to contemporary creations, “Piecing Together Community” showcases quilts as vessels of collective memory, healing, and hope. The exhibition features interviews and photographs of local artists and community groups, as well as materials from past Quilt Shows held at the West Virginia Culture Center and patterns from various sources.

“Piecing Together Community” is on display until Sept. 22, 2025 at the Archives and History Reading Room, and is available during The Culture Center’s operating hours, Tuesday – Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Visitors can also view the department’s annual Quilt and Wall Hanging Juried Exhibition, located in the Culture Center’s Great Hall. This exhibition is in its 44th year and features contemporary quilts made by West Virginia quilters from across the state. The exhibit will be on display until Sept. 13, 2025.
