WVU Medicine St. Joseph’s Hospital donates athletic medical transport cart to support Lewis County student athletes

WVU Medicine St. Joseph’s Hospital recently presented an $18,000 sponsorship to support the purchase of a new athletic medical transport cart for Lewis County Emergency Squad, helping ensure safe care for student-athletes at Lewis County High School sporting events.

The donation was presented during a ceremony on March 6, 2026, made possible through a partnership with Lewis County First, a local group dedicated to strengthening community initiatives and resources throughout Lewis County.

In attendance at the presentation were members of Lewis County First, representatives from the Lewis County Emergency Squad and Lewis County Commission, Lewis County community representatives & guests and administration & staff from WVU Medicine St. Joseph’s Hospital.

The new cart will replace an aging unit currently used by the Lewis County Emergency Squad to assist injured athletes during football games, soccer matches and other athletic events at Lewis County High School. The specialized cart allows emergency responders to quickly and safely transport injured players from the field for evaluation and treatment.

“Supporting the health and safety of our communities goes far beyond the walls of the hospital,” said John Forester, Interim President & CEO at WVU Medicine St. Joseph’s Hospital. “We are fortunate to partner with Lewis County First and the Lewis County Emergency Squad to help bring this equipment to Lewis County and ensure student-athletes have access to the care and resources they need when it matters most.”

The Lewis County Emergency Squad provides medical coverage at local athletic events, ensuring trained emergency personnel and equipment are available to respond when injuries occur. The addition of the new transport cart will enhance the squad’s ability to safely care for athletes and quickly move injured players off the field when necessary.

“This collaboration highlights what can happen when organizations come together to support the well-being of local students and families,” Forester said.
