Walk-in tutoring at West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon has earned Level I International Tutor Training Program certification from the College Reading and Learning Association, the college announced in a September 29 release.
“We have maintained this certification since 2002,” Anita Dib, director of The Learning Center & Accessibility Services, said in the release.
The certification followed a peer review of the center’s tutor training. According to Wesleyan, the program met the association’s requirements for choosing and training tutors, providing tutoring services and evaluating the program.
Faculty members recommend the tutors, who work under supervision after training. They help students work through assignments, plan their studying and understand what professors expect. The college says the aim is to help students learn to work independently.
Tutoring was also part of Wesleyan’s effort to bring academic services together during its library renovation. My Buckhannon reported in September 2019 that the $2 million renovation of Annie Merner Pfeiffer Library consolidated campus tutoring services and the Writing Center and added study rooms.
