Kidney care stays close to home at Elkins’ 120-year-old Davis Medical Center

Patients in central West Virginia have access to expert kidney care close to home at Davis Medical Center in Elkins, the flagship hospital of the Vandalia Health network formerly known as Davis Health System.

Davis Medical Center is among the oldest hospitals in the region. It opened in 1903 as Davis Memorial Hospital, a gift from the family of Henry Gassaway Davis — the U.S. senator who also founded the city of Elkins and Davis & Elkins College — and has served the Potomac Highlands for more than 120 years. Today it is an 80-bed, not-for-profit acute-care hospital that, with its sister facilities, offers more than 50 medical specialties.

The Elkins-based system joined Vandalia Health, the second-largest not-for-profit health network in West Virginia, in 2023 and adopted the Vandalia Health name for its facilities in 2025. It has continued to invest in advanced care, adding a 75,000-square-foot expansion and bringing in services such as advanced Cardiac CT imaging and specialty telemedicine.
