BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — Davis & Elkins College swept a softball doubleheader against West Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday, earning a 6–5 comeback win in Game 1 and a 9–0 shutout victory in Game 2.
Game 1: Davis & Elkins 6, West Virginia Wesleyan 5
Davis & Elkins overcame a 5–1 deficit with a four-run fifth inning and scored the go-ahead run in the seventh to take the opener.
Linzey Allard opened the scoring with a solo home run in the top of the first. West Virginia Wesleyan responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning, all unearned, capitalizing on two defensive errors and aggressive base running. The Lady Bobcats added one more in the fourth on an RBI double by Josi Fix.
In the fifth, Allard drove in a run with a single before Ashlyn Zapach hit a three-run home run to tie the game at 5–5. The winning run came in the top of the seventh when L. Saucedo reached on a fielder’s choice, allowing Cortney Dobbs to score.
Sammie Jarvis pitched a complete game for Davis & Elkins, allowing nine hits and five runs (three earned) with four strikeouts and one walk. West Virginia Wesleyan’s Kendall Stoffel also threw a complete game, striking out 10 while allowing eight hits and six runs (five earned).
Game 2: Davis & Elkins 9, West Virginia Wesleyan 0 (5 innings)
Davis & Elkins secured the sweep with a five-inning run-rule victory, scoring eight runs across the first two innings and shutting out West Virginia Wesleyan.
The Senators scored two runs in the first inning on an RBI single by Lilly Saucedo. In the second inning, Davis & Elkins added six more runs, aided by four West Virginia Wesleyan errors. Key plays included a two-RBI double from Dobbs, a sacrifice fly by Zapach, and RBI contributions from Saucedo and Alyssa Haynes.
Allard added an RBI single in the third to make it 9–0.
Saylor Kneeland threw a five-inning shutout, allowing three hits and no walks with no strikeouts. She faced the minimum over five innings on just 42 pitches. West Virginia Wesleyan used two pitchers in the game, with starter Kelsi Brown charged for seven runs (four earned) in one inning.
