BUCKHANNON — West Virginia Wesleyan College has appointed Zontavius Johnson as its new head coach for cross country and track and field, bringing more than two decades of coaching experience to the program.
Johnson has served in both head and assistant roles throughout his career, including a standout tenure at Olivet Nazarene University, where he earned back‑to‑back NAIA Women’s Indoor Assistant Coach of the Year honors. He later spent eight years as head coach at Benedictine University, specializing in sprints and hurdles.
Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Kyle Hoffman said Johnson’s background and pedigree make him an ideal fit for the Bobcats.
“I am very excited to welcome Coach Johnson to West Virginia Wesleyan,” Hoffman said. “He comes from a decorated track family, and his experience as a former head coach and with the Junior Olympics will be a great asset to our athletes. We look forward to welcoming him to the Buckhannon community.”
Johnson arrived on campus earlier this week and said he is eager to begin shaping the program’s direction.
“Happy to get the opportunity to be the coach here at West Virginia Wesleyan,” Johnson said. “I’m excited to work with all of our athletes across our three seasons and want to bring championships to our home among the hills.”
With the hire now official, Johnson’s first test comes quickly. Wesleyan’s cross country teams travel to Kernersville, North Carolina, for the Regional Preview, marking the opening step in what the program hopes will be a new era of competitiveness.
