Volleyball Lady ‘Cats down Glenville State for second win

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Wesleyan volleyball team (2-10, 1-1 Mountain East Conference) secured its second MEC victory over Glenville State (1-7, 0-3 MEC) on Tuesday (Oct. 5) night at the Rockefeller Center.
 
WVWC Leaders
Michela Ayers led the offensive charge for the Bobcats with 10 kills. Makenzie Yates added eight kills, while Anaya Hyman and Joelle Lalla totaled seven kills each. Payton Hefner kept her hot streak at the service line with three aces. It was Hefner’s third consecutive match with more than three service aces. Hefner included 30 assists to her stat line. Maddi Carpenter matched Hefner with three service aces. Carpenter tallied nine assists and five digs.
 
Defensively, Autumn Molenhouse secured nine digs in three sets. Kennedy Kuhns contributed six digs. Lalla was a force at the net, recording two block solos and two block assists. Lalla and Ayers led Wesleyan with 10 points each.
 
Glenville State Leaders
Karlei Shaver led the Pioneers with 10 kills. Julia King facilitated the offense with 18 assists. King added three service aces. Sarah Mazzaferro hauled in 10 digs. Skylar Mace tallied two block solos and two block assists.
 
Inside Set One
The Lady Bobcats trailed 9-8 early in the first frame. Wesleyan regained the lead after a kill from Hope Arce-Reed and a sneak kill from Carpenter. GSC captured the lead by winning the next two points. WVWC proceeded to win the next six decisions and took a 16-11 lead. Ayers tallied two kills during the Wesleyan 6-0 run.
 
After GSC won the next point, the ‘Cats stayed hot and ignited a 5-0 run to go up 21-12. A Yates kill assisted by Carpenter concluded the first set, 25-15 WVWC.
 
Inside Set Two
The Lady Bobcats held a 7-5 lead early in the second set. The Pioneers went on a 9-1 run and gained a 14-8 lead. The Pioneers controlled set two, 25-18 and evened up the match.
 
Inside Set Three
Wesleyan responded strongly after dropping the second set, winning 10 consecutive points. Hefner placed two consecutive service aces to make the score 5-0. An Ayers kill solidified the 10-0 lead. The Bobcats closed the third set on an 8-2 run, capped off by a service ace from Abby Wetzel. Wesleyan dominated set three, 25-11.
 
Inside Set Four
The two teams split the first 10 points of the fourth set. With the score tied at five, GSC won the next two points to go up 7-5. The ‘Cats clawed back and won the next five points to gain a 10-7 edge. Yates’ seventh kill of the evening put WVWC up 13-8. GSC cut the WVWC deficit and tied the set at 17.
The Lady Bobcats won three crucial points thanks to go up 20-17. A kill from Hyman, a Glenville attack error and a Yates kill gave the ‘Cats a three-point cushion. GSC cut the Bobcat lead to two points twice down the stretch. Wesleyan won the fourth set 25-20, and the match 3-1.

Wesleyan will return to the road on Friday (Oct. 8) and travel to Institute, W.Va., for a match versus West Virginia State at 7 p.m.
