Virus surge continues in Upshur County with six new cases reported Sunday

Six new COVID-19 cases were reported in Upshur County on Sunday, pushing the two-day weekend total to 13.

With the new cases Sunday, Upshur County is now in the upper end of the yellow zone on the county alert map. Just two more cases will put Upshur County into the new ‘gold’ category, meaning sports would be curtailed. Barbour County is currently gold and Randolph County, which reported 10 new cases Sunday, is getting close as the region becomes one of the West Virginia’s new hot spots.

No additional information was released on the new cases. Seventeen cases are currently active in Upshur County, according to the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources. They encompass all the demographic age ranges from 20-29 to 70-plus.

In total, the DHHR announced Sunday that 190 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State.

Two additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 70-year old female from Kanawha County and a 72-year old male from Kanawha County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of 10 a.m., September 27, 2020, there have been 549,310 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 15,348 total cases and 334 deaths,” according to a press release.

New cases were reported Sunday in Berkeley, Boone, Cabell, Clay, Doddridge, Fayette, Grant, Greenbrier, Hampshire, Hancock, Hardy, Harrison, Jackson, Jefferson, Kanawha, Lincoln, Logan, Marion, Marshall, Mason, McDowell, Mercer, Mineral, Monongalia, Nicholas, Ohio, Preston, Putnam, Raleigh, Randolph, Ritchie, Taylor, Tucker, Upshur, Wayne, Wetzel, Wood and Wyoming counties.

A record 3,854 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 11,160 people have recovered and 334 have died. The daily percent positive was 2.4%.
