Upshur man arrested Monday for felony domestic battery

BUCKHANNON – An Upshur County man was arrested Monday for allegedly hitting a person in the face and pushing them in the chest.

Bryce Guseman, 23, of Buckhannon was arrested for domestic battery third offense, a felony.

According to the criminal complaint in the Upshur County Magistrate Clerk’s Office filed by investigating officer Sgt. Theron Caynor with the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office, on Jan. 31, 2022, the E911 Upshur County Communication Center received a call regarding a domestic altercation in progress on the South Road in Upshur County.

When deputies arrived on scene, they found Guseman in a back room of a garage by the residence.

Caynor spoke to the victim, who said Guseman was being verbally abusive and allegedly threatening to tear up his mother’s cellphone, the complaint states. The female victim asked Guseman to stop speaking to his mother that way, and he allegedly struck her in the face two times and pushed her in the chest, according to the file.

According to the report, the victim had a red mark around her left eye from being struck by Guseman. One of Guseman’s relatives witnessed the incident and called 911.

Guseman had two previous convictions of domestic abuse with dates of June 11, 2020, and Jan. 24, 2022.

Upshur County Magistrate Alan Suder set bail at $25,000 cash only.

The penalty for conviction of third-offense domestic battery is confinement in the state penitentiary for not less than one nor more than five years, a fine of up to $25,000 or both.
