The National Weather Service in Charleston has issued a flood warning for Upshur County due to heavy rainfall in the area.
“Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicated that heavy rain was falling over the area,” according to the warning. “Up to one inch of rain has already fallen and another 0.5 to 1.0 inch is still expected this evening and tonight. The heavy rain will cause flooding.”
The NWS warns drivers to be cautious and avoid driving through flooded roadways.
“Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads,” the warning reads. “Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.”
While the warning expires at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, a less severe flood watch remains in effect through Tuesday night.
