The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Thursday that 940 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State.
Locally, the DHHR reported new cases in Upshur (26), Barbour (12), Lewis (9), Randolph (24) and Webster (2) counties. A total of 199 cases are currently active in Upshur County, according to the DHHR.
However, the state is still underreporting nearly 400 COVID-19 cases in Upshur County, according to numbers released by the local health department.
In a press release Wednesday afternoon, the Upshur-Buckhannon Health Department said there are 1,703 total cases in Upshur County — 370 more than the 1,333 the DHHR is reporting. Currently, 249 cases are active locally, according to the health department.
The Upshur-Buckhannon Health Department said Wednesday they are working to understand why the state numbers are so much lower than the county numbers.
Upshur County is orange on the school map, which uses the DHHR totals.
Statewide, 14 additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR:
- a 93-year old female from Wood County,
- a 72-year old male from Kanawha County,
- a 54-year old male from Cabell County,
- a 66-year old male from Mercer County,
- an 81-year old male from Doddridge County,
- a 65-year old female from Kanawha County,
- a 66-year old male from Harrison County,
- a 74-year old female from Kanawha County,
- a 68-year old male from Wood County,
- a 36-year old female from Kanawha County,
- an 83-year old female from Wood County,
- an 84-year old male from Cabell County,
- a 78-year old male from Kanawha County,
- a 58-year old female from Hancock County.
“The West Virginia DHHR reports as of January 21, 2021, there have been 1,801,381 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 112,617 total cases and 1,849 total deaths,” according to a press release.
About 25,737 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 85,031 people have recovered and 1,849 have died. The daily percent positive was 5.25%.
A total of 32,122 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said.
