The Upshur County Public Library will host its Food for Fines program throughout November, allowing patrons to reduce their library fines by donating non-perishable food items.
The program supports Free Meals Appalachia, a project that provides family meal bags made from pantry items to help address SNAP benefit gaps. Free Meals Appalachia is part of the Appalachian Mutual Aid Collective.
Throughout November, library patrons with outstanding fines can bring in donations of non-perishable food items to the library. Each donation will help reduce fines while supporting families in need throughout the community.
The program accepts a wide variety of shelf-stable items including canned proteins like chicken, tuna and beans, pasta and rice products, canned vegetables, soups, sauces and pantry staples. Specific items needed include boxed macaroni and cheese, stuffing mix, scalloped potatoes, various pasta shapes, canned goods like diced tomatoes, corn, green beans and mixed vegetables, cream soups, coconut milk, evaporated milk, pasta sauce, BBQ sauce and seasonings.
