BUCKHANNON – My Buckhannon is proud to present another edition of the Hank Ellis All-Stars. Each week, we will select a female and male athlete at Buckhannon-Upshur who has had an exemplary week on the basketball court, the wrestling mat, or the swimming pool.
Our Hank Ellis All-Stars for the week of Jan.29 – Feb. 4 are Carter Zuliani and Mallory Hughes.
Zuliani is a junior on the Buckhannon-Upshur basketball and swim team. In the pool at the Region III Championships, he advanced to states in two events, the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle. He placed third in both events with a time of 22.83 in the 50-yard freestyle and a time of 52.78 in the 100-yard freestyle. On the basketball court, in a 1-1 week for the Bucs, he had a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds in a 56-46 win at Philip Barbour and had eight points and 11 rebounds in a road loss to Bridgeport.
Hughes is a sophomore on the B-U swimming team.
She qualified for four events for the state championship Saturday at the Region III finals held at Bridgeport. She qualified for two individual events and was part of two qualifying relay teams. She qualified in the 50-yard freestyle placing third with a time of 26.54 and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 59.86. She was also part of the 200-yard freestyle team that took third with a time of 1:57.65 and the 200-yard medley relay team that took fifth with a time of 2:21.59 that advanced to states.
