BUCKHANNON – My Buckhannon is proud to present another season of the Hank Ellis All-Stars. Each week, we will select a male and female athlete at Buckhannon-Upshur who has had an exemplary week on the basketball court, wrestling mat or swimming pool.
Our Hank Ellis All-Stars for the week of March 3 – March 9 are Andrew McDowell and Maya Garcia.
McDowell is a senior on the Buccaneer wrestling team. McDowell became a two-time medalist at the state tournament after placing fifth this past weekend in the 132-pound division. He won three matches at states, pinning Cohen Cernoch of Musselman in 32 seconds in his opening match and winning a 17-9 major decision over Shad Henry of Huntington in the second round. He finished the tournament winning the fifth-sixth-place match with a pin in 2:12 over Carter Adkins of John Marshall.
Garcia is a junior on the Buckhannon-Upshur wrestling team. She became a champion in the West Virginia Girl’s State Invitational in the 138-pound division. She went a perfect 4-0 record after pinning Alexandra Watkins in her first match in 3:13, pinning Willow Rhoten of Berkley Springs in 30 seconds in round two, pinning Kinley Buckley of George Washington in 46 seconds in the semis and rallying to pin Nicholas County’s Makenzie Hanshaw after being behind on points in 5:11. She helped Buckhannon-Upshur to claim the team title.
Congratulations to McDowell and Garcia as our weekly winners of the Hank Ellis All-Stars honor.
