Tennis Bucs tumble to Lincoln and Morgantown

TENNERTON – Jacob Ham picked up both of Buckhannon-Upshur’s wins against the Lincoln Cougars on Monday in Big 10 Conference boys’ tennis action Monday evening at the West Virginia Wesleyan courts.

While the Bucs dropped a 5-2 decision, Ham, along with Cody Trainer were victorious at No. 2 doubles getting a hard fought 9-7 win against Damion Shaw and Brayden Zimmerman and then Ham competed at No. 4 singles and defeated Zimmerman by an 8-2 score.

“I think our boys played their best match of the year,” noted Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jason Rock. “Unfortunately a few of our guys couldn’t be there but we still made it close. I was really happy with how we played as a whole and I thought Cody and Jacob especially played well in their singles and doubles matches.”

The Bucs then hosted Morgantown on Wednesday and lost an 8-0 decision, not winning a set or match in non-conference action.

“Morgantown is by far the best team that we play,” stated Rock.” They have been the best team in our region for years. Their junior varsity kids would compete with most varsity teams in the Big 10 Conference so it was tough going against them after matching up pretty well with Lincoln on Monday. I think our boys played okay though, they were just really outmatched. Hopefully it is motivation to work to get better to make those matches more competitive in the future.”

The pair of losses dropped the Bucs to 0-9 overall and 0-6 in the Big 10 Conference.

They were rained out of their match on Thursday at North Marion.

The Bucs will be back in action with a return clash at Morgantown on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
