Tennis Bucs go 3-1 during three-day stretch of action

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur tennis Bucs picked up three victories in two days last Monday and Tuesday but dropped their first outing of the year to Bridgeport on Wednesday.

Last Monday, the Bucs won a 4-0 decision over Fairmont Senior at home and then won a road doubleheader Tuesday beating Robert C. Byrd and Grafton by identical 7-0 scores.

On Wednesday, the Bucs dropped their first outing of the year losing a 7-0 decision on the road to Bridgeport.

The three-days of action left the Bucs with a 10-1 record.

In their win against Fairmont Senior, Aden Pitts at No. 1, Caden Andrick at No. 2 and Mauricio Menendez at No. 3 all claimed singles victories and Pitts and Andrick earned a victory at No. 1 doubles.

“The boys did great against Fairmont Senior and started a busy week off the right way,” stated Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jason Rock.

In their doubleheader sweep against Robert C. Byrd and Grafton, Pitts at No. 1, Andrick at No. 2, Menendez at No. 3 and Hank Phillips at No. 4 all went 2-0 while in doubles action, Pitts and Andrick at No. 1, Menendez and Phillips at No. 2 and Bailey Cleavenger and Donovan Cutlip at No. 3 were all undefeated.

“I was happy with how the boys played in their doubleheader,” commented Rock. “Aden was struggling to find his shots in singles but he is a good player and found a way to win. Bailey and Donovan at No. 3 doubles struggled their first few matches and seemed to lack confidence at times but against RCB they seemed to be firing on all cylinders. Grafton only had two boys on the team but Aden and Caden played well despite the two-hour wait between RCB and Grafton.”

Rock said his tired Bucs just didn’t have it against Bridgeport.

“After a very long Monday night and Tuesday night, as well as the heat and sun taking its toll on us, we seemed exhausted as a whole Wednesday against Bridgeport,” noted Rock. “With Bridgeport being a regional and conference opponent, it was a big evening for us but we just didn’t have it in us. It just wasn’t our night. I do think a few of the Bridgeport boys seem very improved from the players they were last year but I think we were overall tired from playing three matches in two days prior.”

The Bucs were slated to finish off a busy week last week at Lewis County on Thursday and at John Marshall on Saturday.

They will be home Monday against Elkins and will visit Morgantown on Tuesday.
