Tennis Bucs compete in Region I Tournament

MORGANTOWN – The Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneer tennis team competed in the Region I Tournament last week and came away with one victory.

The Bucs didn’t pick up any singles wins but the doubles team of Jacob Ham and Cody Trainer defeated Brooke’s John Bariska and Aiden Haught by an 8-6 score in round one before falling in round two to Morgantown’s Max Phillips-Hartley and Bennett Hall by an 8-0 score.

The Buccaneer duo of Bradly Helmick and Tommy Swift had a competitive match in doubles, coming up just short in round one to Narada Braun and Joshua Dominquez of John Marshall by an 8-6 score.

“We didn’t play that great in singles, but I think they made up for it in doubles,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jason Rock. “We played some of the best doubles from all three doubles teams that I think we’ve played all year which was great to see. Cody and Jacob are the most improved doubles team (and probably the two most improved boys’ players) since the beginning of the season and they played a fantastic match vs Brooke. Unfortunately, their second-round match was against the top doubles team in our region with Morgantown’s Hartley-Brown and Hall, but even against them they had some good shots and never quit.”

The Region I Tournament wrapped up the season for the Bucs.

“Overall, I was pleased that we won a match and ended the season well,” concluded Rock. “I think the kids all had fun in their matches, despite the tough regional competition, and they already can’t wait for next year. We will really miss Bradly (our lone senior) but everyone else is coming back! There is already talk amongst the underclassmen of playing tennis in the offseason, taking lessons, hitting the gym and working out, etc. which is great to hear!”
