Softball Lady ‘Cats take two at home from Alderson Broaddus

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Wesleyan softball team picked up their 25th win of the season and improved to (12-2) in MEC play with a doubleheader sweep of Alderson Broaddus Monday evening. The Lady Bobcats took the first game 6-0 and run ruled the Battlers in six innings in game two 9-1, a game where they posted 14 hits,

Game 1
After getting back-to-back singles and putting runners at second and third with one out in the top of the first, the Battlers were sent back to the dugout with nothing as Hannah Hudson forced a foul out and struck out the five-hole hitter to end the top half of the inning. Hallie Dinklocker started the bottom half of the inning with a single and scored on a sac bunt from Taylor Swartz due to an errant throw from the first baseman to third, allowing Dinklocker to jog home.

Alyssa Souders led the bottom of the second with a home run over the left field fence. Swartz had a similar solo shot in the bottom of the third with two outs, extending the Lady Bobcat lead to 3-0 after three innings. Hudson continued to do her part in the circle and the Lady Bobcat offense continued to do their part, plating three more runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Emily Ross got on first to start the inning from an error by the shortstop and advanced to third on a double from Alli Robinson. With runners at second and third, Dinklocker was able to hit a double on an awkward bounce in left field, plating both runners. Swartz then matched Dinklocker, hitting a double to score Swartz and make it 6-0 after five.

In the top of the seventh, Alderson Broaddus loaded the bases with one out after a single, double and a hit batter. Hudson got out of the late inning trouble and finished off her complete game with a strikeout and a groundout.

Five different Battlers picked up a hit. Amber Corley took the loss, going six innings while surrendering six runs (four earned) on six hits and striking out two.

Dinklocker and Swartz both went 2-3 with two RBIs apiece to lead the Bobcats while Souders added an RBI. Hudson picked up her 10th win of the season, giving up no runs on five hits and nine strikeouts.

Game 2
A leadoff double by AB didn’t phase Kendall Stoffel as she struck the next three batters out. The Lady Bobcats put their first runs on the board in the bottom of the second with a suicide squeeze by Kaitlyn Rizor which scored Jenna Christopher and Alyssa Rohr singled Souders home. The scoring wasn’t over for the Lady Bobcats as Swartz singled through the left side of the infield to bring two across the plate to make it 4-0 after two innings of play.

In the bottom of the third, Robinson doubled to center and scored on a one-run double from Souders in the left-center gap. The Battlers loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the fifth, only scoring one run on a hit batter. Wesleyan put two more runners across in the bottom of the fifth on a one-run double from Rizor and a one-run single from Rohr.

AB put two runners on with two outs in the top of the sixth but Stoffel struck out her ninth batter to get out of the inning unscathed. Savannah O’Shields was able to end the game early with an infield single after Andie Dizon and Alyssa singled to begin the inning as the Lady Bobcats run ruled the Battlers 9-1.

Five different Battlers had a hit once again and Cortney Fizer had the only RBI for AB. Meadow Uncapher was handed the loss, going 5 2/3 innings and giving up nine runs (five earned) on 14 hits and one walk.

Souders was a perfect 4-4 at the plate with a RBI as Rohr, Swartz and Rizor all knocked in two runs each. Stoffel picked up win number 12, giving up one run (earned) on five hits and striking out nine in six innings of work.
