Softball Lady Bucs eliminated from sectional tournament with losses to University and Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT – Following a sectional tournament win in their opener last Friday, the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs saw their luck run out in the double elimination tournament this week.

In the winner’s bracket game with University on Monday, the Lady Bucs were no-hit in an 8-0 five-inning setback and then one bad inning against Bridgeport on Tuesday cost them a win and eliminated them from the tournament in a 15-10 setback.

In Monday’s battle with University, Hawk freshman pitcher Maddie Campbell didn’t allow a hit while walking just one and fanning 11.

Reagan Mason reached on an error in the top of the second inning and Katarah Linger drew the walk in the top of the third inning as the only two Lady Bucs to reach base.

University scored two in the bottom of the second then tacked on five more in the third for a 7-0 lead.

They ended the game on the mercy rule with a run in the bottom of the fifth.

Lauren Heusbesch led the University offense with three hits while Ashlyn Weaver knocked in three runs.

Jansen Kimble suffered the loss for B-U. She tossed all four innings and allowed seven earned runs on 10 hits while not allowing a walk and striking out one.

In Tuesday’s outing with Bridgeport, Buckhannon-Upshur owned a 10-4 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning but things fell apart as they gave up 11 runs in that inning dropping the game by a 15-10 score.

The Lady Bucs were down 1-0 in the top of the second when they tied the game with a run when Reagan Mason walked and scored on a ground out by Linger.

After Bridgeport took the lead back at 2-1 after two full innings, B-U pushed across four runs in the top of the third for a 5-2 lead when Kailey Hart and Reese Curry each drove in a run and the Lady Bucs scored the other two runs on errors.

Bridgeport scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to make it a 5-4 game.

Alyssa Abel crushed a pitch over the center field fence in the top of the fourth making it a 6-4 contest and the Lady Bucs made it 9-4 with three more runs in the fifth when Kimble, Mason and Burnside all scored.

Buckhannon-Upshur made it 10-4 in the top of the sixth when Kimble singled and later scored on a single by Linger.

Bridgeport sent 15 batters to the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning for their 11-run outburst.

The Lady Bucs went down in order in the top of the seventh inning.

B-U had 11 hits with Abel leading the way with three while Kimble and Curry each had two.

Kimble started in the circle and went 5 2/3 innings and allowed eight earned runs on 16 hits and struck out six.

The Lady Bucs closed out the year with a 10-11 mark.
