Soccer ‘Cats and ABU battle to 1-1 draw

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Wesleyan (1-0-1) men’s soccer team played Alderson Broaddus (0-1-2) to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday (Aug. 31) at Culpepper Stadium.

The Bobcats started fast with a well-designed opening play in which Sinasi Emre Deniz found the back of the goal within 10 seconds of the match starting. The goal was disallowed and called offsides and the remainder of the half was a battle of transition for both teams.

In the 80th minute of the second half, Deniz broke the deadlock after striking a set piece outside the box which deflected off a defender and was rolled past the goalkeeper.
Just two minutes later, an Alderson Broaddus player was able to drive into the box and force a Bobcat defender to make a tackle that was called a penalty. Nathan Bouard was able to slip past the penalty kick past Logan Nelson in the 82nd minute to tie the score. Neither team could muster anything during the final eight minutes of regulation, giving WVWC its first draw of the season.

The Bobcats will be back in action on Wednesday (Sept. 7) in Wheeling for a match against the Cardinals starting at 7:30 p.m.
