Soccer Bucs roll past Huskies, pick up 6-1 home victory

TENNERTON – Buckhannon-Upshur’s Riel Figueroa tallied three goals and added an assist as the Bucs recorded a convincing 6-1 home win in Big 10 Conference action Tuesday night.

Christian Dowell gave the Bucs a quick 1-0 lead in the first minute when he played a pass from the right corner from Figueroa and finished with a shot to the far post.

Six minutes later, Figueroa tallied his first score, an unassisted goal after he dribbled through the middle of the field and scored with a shot to the near post.

North Marion scored their lone goal in the 20th minute on a score by Malichi Stewart with the assist going to Leeland Greaser.

North Marion scored an own goal when a cross deflected off a defender and past Husky keeper Cooper Williams making it a 3-1 game.

B-U scored one more time before the half with Figueroa scoring on a penalty kick making it a 4-1 contest.

Just two minutes into the second half, Figueroa scored his third goal when he stole a pass from a defender and dribbled it in and made it a 5-1 game with a shot to the far post.

The final B-U goal belonged to Coby Smith who took a centering pass from Dowell and scored with a shot to the near post.

“Tonight, was a physical and cleanly played game by both sides,” stated Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Mike Donato. “When we were able to keep the ball down and possess, we were able to dictate the play. Because of that I felt we played one of our most complete games tonight. We saw everyone from back to front get involved and play a complete game. We saw quick decisions and quality passes, which have been big points of emphasis in the last few practices. I was especially proud of our reserve players who saw quality minutes and created some quality chances.”

The Bucs owned a 13-5 lead in shots-on-goals and an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.

B-U was called for three fouls while North Marion was guilty of two.

Buckhannon-Upshur’s Slaton Kowalkoski and Kaleb Kowalkoski shared time in the net with Slaton making three saves while Kaleb made one save in the second half.

Williams made seven saves for North Marion.

The loss was the first for the Huskies and they dropped to 2-1-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the Big 10 Conference.

The Bucs won their fourth game in a row and improved to 4-3 overall and 3-0 in the Big 10 Conference.

Buckhannon-Upshur will return to the pitch Thursday for another conference outing at Grafton with a start time of 8 p.m.
