Soccer Bucs and Eagles battle to 0-0 draw

TENNERTON – For the fifth straight game, the Buckhannon-Upshur soccer Bucs failed to score but was able to salvage a 0-0 deadlock against the Robert C. Byrd Eagles in a Big 10 Conference game Thursday night at the high school.

Despite the scoreless draw, Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Mike Donato was pleased with how his Bucs played.

“Tonight, we saw an intensity and focus that I feel we’ve been missing the past few games,” remarked Donato. “We had a great practice yesterday and that seemed to carry over into today’s game. Our defensive shape and pressure are really what was most impressive tonight. We stepped hard to most passes and put quick pressure on the ball and used that to keep the pressure off keeper Slaton (Kowalkoski) and create some offense opportunities. I give RCB a lot of credit they are a very strong defensive team and didn’t give us any easy looks at the goal.”

The Bucs did win the stat sheet as they owned a 9-2 margin in shots-on-goal and a 5-2 lead in corner kicks.

The Bucs were called for just one foul while the Eagles were called for three.

Kowalkoski made two saves for the Bucs while Eagle goalie Wyatt Crislip turned away nine shots.

The tie left the Bucs with a 4-8-2 mark overall and a 3-3-1 mark in the conference.

They will be back in action next Thursday hosting Philip Barbour in a conference game starting at 7:30 p.m.
