Six ways to have an ‘Eggs’-tra special Easter weekend with your family

BUCKHANNON – As we begin our celebrations for Easter this Sunday, My Buckhannon has scoured the area in search of activities that are geared for the younger set to have an ‘egg-celent’ time as they prepare for Peter Cottontail to come hopping down the bunny trail. While these are by no means all the events geared for youth, our hope is everyone can find at least one fun pursuit to put a smile on the young ones’ faces.

First, hop on down to the Upshur County Public Library, located at 1150 Route 20 South Road in Buckhannon, where they have Easter take-and-make kits. One of these include a bunny rocket that will enable students to learn about rocketry while launching a ‘bunny egg’ into the air!

It seems everyone is ‘hopping into Spring,’ and the Upshur County Public Library is offering take-and-make kits to complete a bunny rocket. The UCPL also has take-and-make books with crafts and a wide variety of Easter-themed books to share with the family. / Photo courtesy UCPL

The UCPL also has great collections of Easter-related book bundles ready to check out and read at home with the grown-ups. Stop by and ‘check them out!’ Additional information is available on their Facebook page or by calling 304-473-4219.

Another great Easter activity that we highly recommend is ordering an Easter cookie decorating kit from Jane Scott. These sets include all one needs to have a fun time with family decorating of Easter cookies – and include a dozen Easter-themed sugar cookies plus four pastry bags filled with colored, homemade buttercream icing and four containers of sprinkles.

Scott sells other baked goodies and orders for those and the Easter cookie decorating kits may be placed through Wednesday by contacting her on Facebook or calling 304-439-2573. She arranges for pickup of the Easter cookie kits on Saturday at Buckhannon Sheetz.

If painting is more in line with your family’s favorite type of activity, perhaps you will enjoy joining in on an ‘Egg Hunt Bunny’ acrylic canvas class at Sweet-A- Licious, located at 23B East Main Street in Buckhannon. The class is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, April 2, and folks need to RSVP and pay the fee by today, Wednesday, March 31. The completed painting is 12-by-12 and all supplies are included. Reservations can be made by calling Sweet-A-Licious at 304-472-6189.

One Easter favorite tradition that attracts kids of all ages this time of year is Easter Egg Hunts. Here is some information for some nearby Easter Egg Hunts:

  • The 14th annual 10,000 Easter Egg Hunt – and a chance to meet the Easter Bunny – is happening Easter Sunday, April 4 in Weston at the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. The event is free and children of all ages can meet the Easter Bunny and take photos beginning at noon. The Easter Egg Hunt begins promptly at 1 p.m. Those attending age five and over are required to wear face coverings. Additional information is available on their Facebook page.
  • The Washington District Volunteer Fire Company is hosting an Easter Egg hunt Sunday, April 4 beginning at 1 p.m. Those attending this event are asked to please maintain social distancing. Additional information is available on their Facebook page or by calling 304-472-3762.
  • Families wanting to venture a bit further can attend an Easter event on Friday, April 2 from 5 to 8 p.m. The Cartoon Headquarters Fun Zone Rentals, located at 2399 Meadowbrook Mall Road in Bridgeport, is offering activities such as the reading of the Peter Rabbit story, unlimited access to inflatables and games, snacks, drinks, dancing, an Easter Egg hunt and Easter crafts to make and take. Additional information is available on their Facebook page or by calling 304-623-9184. This event has an admission charge of $15.

Whatever activities your family chooses, we hope everyone has a very ‘Hoppy’ Easter!
